Instead, a group of follicles begins to mature together, with only the dominant follicle reaching ovulation while the remaining follicles naturally undergo atresia. Therefore, changes in ovarian reserve cannot simply be calculated based on the number of menstrual cycles.
A normal menstrual cycle typically ranges from 21 to 35 days. As long as the cycle remains consistently stable over time, it is generally considered a normal physiological pattern and does not necessarily indicate premature ovarian aging.
Why Do Some Women Have Shorter Menstrual Cycles?
The menstrual cycle consists of the follicular phase and the luteal phase.
The luteal phase is relatively stable and usually lasts about 14 days, while the length of the follicular phase varies considerably among individuals. Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), hormonal fluctuations, and the speed of follicle development can all influence the overall cycle length.
Lifestyle factors also play an important role. Chronic sleep deprivation, high stress levels, significant weight changes, or sudden increases or decreases in exercise may all affect menstrual regularity. Certain gynecological conditions, including endometriosis, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and thyroid disorders, may also contribute to changes in cycle length.
If your period comes a few days early only occasionally, there is usually no reason for excessive concern. However, if your cycle becomes consistently shorter and is accompanied by reduced menstrual flow, irregular bleeding, or difficulty conceiving, it is advisable to undergo a comprehensive medical evaluation as early as possible.
How Can You Accurately Assess Your Fertility?
Compared with simply tracking menstrual cycles, modern reproductive medicine places greater emphasis on objective fertility assessments.
Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) testing is widely used to evaluate ovarian reserve because it provides a relatively stable reflection of the number of remaining follicles in the ovaries.
