Can You Still Conceive With Abnormal AMH? IVF Planning in the U.S., Mexico, and Japan

During fertility planning, AMH is increasingly included in routine test results. When the level is lower or higher than expected, many people immediately become concerned about ovarian function. AMH is mainly used to assess ovarian reserve. It cannot independently determine egg quality or directly predict whether an attempt to conceive will be successful.

What Does Low AMH Mean?

AMH is mainly produced by small follicles in the ovaries, so it can provide an indication of the approximate number of remaining follicles. A low AMH level may suggest reduced ovarian reserve, and fewer eggs may potentially be obtained during ovarian stimulation.

However, low AMH does not mean that there are no eggs, nor does it mean that natural conception or IVF is no longer possible. Age, ovulation, the condition of the fallopian tubes and uterus, sperm quality, and other factors all need to be evaluated together.

How Much Can Lifestyle Changes Affect Abnormal AMH?

Diet, sleep, exercise, and weight management are all important aspects of preconception planning, but they should not be understood as ways to directly reverse diminished ovarian reserve.

There is currently no reliable method to restore reduced ovarian reserve through a particular food or supplement. Folic acid is an important nutrient during preconception, mainly because it helps reduce the risk of neural tube defects, rather than because it can increase AMH.

As for supplements such as CoQ10 and DHEA, they should not simply be viewed as fixed approaches for “increasing AMH” or “improving egg quality.” DHEA, in particular, has hormone-related effects, so whether it is appropriate should be determined by a doctor based on individual circumstances.

Why Is IVF-PGT Worth Understanding?

After an egg is fertilized and develops into an embryo, genetic testing of embryos is also an important part of the overall fertility planning process. IVF-PGT can test relevant chromosomal or genetic information in embryos, providing additional information for embryo selection and transfer planning.

Therefore, when learning about IVF in the U.S., Mexico, and Japan, it is useful to understand the entire process through multiple stages, including egg numbers, embryo development, IVF-PGT testing, and subsequent embryo transfer. AMH is an important indicator, but it is not the whole picture of fertility. When AMH is abnormal, the key factors to consider are age, ovarian reserve, egg quality, and overall reproductive health before deciding on the timing of preconception, egg freezing, or IVF.
