Does Abortion Affect Fertility? IVF in the U.S., Mexico & Japan

Unplanned pregnancies, contraceptive failures, and changes in family planning can place women in difficult situations. For those who have had an abortion but still hope to have children in the future, two questions often arise: Can an abortion affect future fertility? And if pregnancy does not occur despite trying to conceive, how should they choose an appropriate assisted reproductive treatment?

Having an abortion does not necessarily lead to infertility. Important factors include whether the procedure was completed without complications, whether infection or endometrial damage occurred, and whether menstruation and ovulation have returned to normal. Understanding these factors can support a more informed fertility assessment and help guide future treatment planning, including IVF in the United States and IVF-PGT.

Can an Abortion Affect Future Fertility?

Fertility outcomes after an abortion vary from person to person. An abortion performed safely and without complications generally does not directly cause infertility. However, some women may experience fertility problems due to infection, intrauterine adhesions, or other complications.

For example, intrauterine adhesions may affect the uterine environment, while fallopian tube damage or complications associated with infection may increase the risk of difficulty conceiving. Women who experience a significant reduction in menstrual flow, irregular periods, persistent abdominal pain, or difficulty conceiving after an extended period of trying should seek a gynecological evaluation.

The number of abortions alone does not determine a person's fertility. Age, previous gynecological conditions, ovulation, fallopian tube health, and a partner's sperm quality can all affect natural conception.

How to Prepare for Pregnancy After an Abortion

Physical recovery and future fertility planning should be considered together. After an abortion, women should attend follow-up appointments as recommended by their doctors to confirm recovery and determine when to try conceiving again based on their individual health. If menstrual irregularities, infection, or uterine problems are present, the underlying cause should be identified before developing a subsequent plan.

For women planning a pregnancy, preconception examinations can help assess ovulation, uterine health, and other aspects of reproductive health. Men should also consider semen quality, as fertility challenges may involve either partner rather than the woman alone.

If pregnancy has not occurred after a period of regular attempts, a fertility evaluation can be arranged based on age and medical history. In general, women under 35 may consider an infertility evaluation after 12 months of trying to conceive without success. Women aged 35 and older are generally advised to seek evaluation after six months. Those with known reproductive conditions or other relevant risk factors may benefit from seeking care earlier.

IVF-PGT and Genetic Testing: Understanding Embryo Genetics

In fertility treatment, IVF-PGT and preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) are important technologies to understand. PGT-A can assess the chromosome number of embryos and provide information to guide embryo selection and transfer planning. For families who want additional genetic information before embryo transfer, this testing can provide further insight to support treatment decisions.
