U.S., Mexico, and Japan IVF: Why Is Blastocyst Transfer Receiving Attention?

 

After egg retrieval, the eggs need to be fertilized by sperm, after which the embryos begin to divide continuously. Early embryos go through stages such as cleavage and morula, usually developing into blastocysts around day 5–6 after fertilization.

 

Not every fertilized egg can continue to develop through this process. As culture progresses, the number of embryos gradually decreases, and the number that ultimately develops into blastocysts is one of the important references for evaluating the outcome of embryo culture. Therefore, retrieving more eggs does not necessarily mean having more transferable embryos in the end.

 

A blastocyst has completed relatively extensive early development, with further cell differentiation forming the inner cell mass and trophectoderm. In natural conception, the embryo also develops for several days before entering the uterus and beginning implantation. Therefore, blastocyst transfer can better align the timing of embryo transfer with the endometrium. At the same time, the ability to develop to the blastocyst stage itself means that the embryo has already undergone a round of natural developmental selection.
